The Perfect
CV
Research indicates that using
your own words in a CV is more meaningful to employers.
- Keep it short, no more than
three pages. Any longer and it will not be read.
Too short and it leaves the reader guessing.
- Start with personal details,
but don't include names and ages of children or
irrelevant information. Keep it short and include
all contact details, do not use more than half the
page for this information.
- Briefly outline the
type of challenge you are looking for and give an
explanation as to why. It is not necessary to provide
a personal profile on how wonderful you are, but
you may wish to include a brief outline of your
skills, abilities and strengths.
- Ensure relevant qualifications
and training are shown.
- Put current job first - reverse
chronology throughout. What you are doing is what
counts, not where you started.
- Make it easy for the reader
to pick out successes in each job. Have a heading
for 'Major Achievements' followed by no fewer than
three, and no more than six, bullet points clearly
outlining triumphs!
- A few sentences after the
bullet points should explain in more detail the
role and context.
- Repeat the same format for
previous jobs, but make each progressively shorter.
- Include extra-curricular
or other interesting personal activities, but put
them at the end.
- Give at least two names and
addresses of referees - one should be a previous
employer.
